Healing Beyond the Mind: Recovery through Nervous System Regulation

At Vagus Counseling we use Brainspotting an advanced form of EMDR therapy, and other experiential therapies to help you experience healing in the nervous system. Trauma needs to be healed in both the mind and nervous system as trauma disrupts the function of the Vagus nerve(s) and Sympathetic Trunk and can lead to dysfunction in other parts of our body.

Many clients report quick healing, and feeling lighter the day following a session. Clients experience a Reduction in emotional and somatic pain. Memories become less painful, negative thought patterns are reduced and sleep improves.

CBT alone is only addressing the cognitive mind. Newer research is finding trauma, anxiety, and depression need to be healed in the nervous, endocrine, and lymphatic systems. If talk therapy doesn’t work for you or is no longer helping this may be the next step in your healing journey.

  • "Others assumed my perfectionism came from religious Trauma but we listened to the truth of my nervous system."

  • "When you feel it verses talk in circles in therapy you can really heal it."

  • "I didn't have to feel shame seeing a male therapist for sexual trauma(or a female) because every little detail didn't matter, just what my nervous system was holding onto."

  • "I was stuck in talk therapy so long just going in circles, in five sessions we actually felt both the pain and also joy in my life in my shoulders and heart."

  • "As an EMT I didn't realize until now how many people I let rent space in my head. I literaly felt them escaping my shoulder muscles."

  • PTSD, Anxiety, and many other mental health conditions are not thought (Aka Cognitive Disorders). They are treatable disruptions of the nervous, endocrine, and lymphatic systems.

  • Anxiety

When stressors both perceived and actual are always present, we are constantly in this stress response system of flight-or-fight.

Brainspotting and somatic therapies help release stressors held in our nervous system, and muscles, returning us to a natural way of being.

  • Addictions

At Vagus Counseling it is rarely about the addiction. It is simply the medicator to underlying, stress, depression, anxiety and trauma.

What makes Vagus Counseling different is we believe addiction is amplified when we no longer feel connected with ourselves. In therapy we will rarely talk about the addiction but about your core self and heal the root pain.

  • Medical Trauma and Fibromyalgia

Chronic ventral vagal response can lead to digestive issues, chronic pain, and immune system dysfunction.

The dorsal vagal response is to prepare us to feel less pain. The nervous system does not understand modern medicine. You lived, but your body does not feel alive.

At Vagus counseling we start by either slowing down or speeding up your nervous system which ever is needed for you.

  • PTSD

Single incident traumas are often treated in just a few sessions. CPTSD can take longer.

With graphic traumas such as sexual assault, we do not go over every little detail. Only what effects you now still maters. Clients may process a trauma and say as few as 10 words.

Often times I hear something new everyday, although as a former EMT and firefighter I have been in the trenches with people on their worst days.

Jerry specializes in institutional abuse, as a survivor himself he understands the fear and thought patterns of other survivors.

Vagus Counseling also specializes in Developmental Traumas. Bullying growing up, moving frequently, learning slightly differently or due to ADHD as several examples

  • Chronic Burnout

Chronic burnout causes physical symptoms such as extreme fatigue, a lack of energy and being unable to think clearly.

Burnout is a normal response to your bodies nervous and endocrine system. We will work together to help find balance.

  • Faith Crisis

We embrace the beauty and purpose of human uniqueness. It is the job of the therapist to remain neutral in your journey. Some clients return to their faith and others chose a different route.

Experiences, thought patterns, and behaviors are the way in which specific neural networks are established, utilized, and strengthened. We work together to bring your neural networks to your natural way to reconnect to your own truth whatever that may be.
